Shark NV105 Navigator Light Vacuum Review – Too Weak?

Shark has really enforced their best-selling brand with a series of Navigator vacuum cleaners. The most popular of these is the Navigator Lift-Away Professional, but other varieties include the Navigator Deluxe and the NV105 Navigator Light. As the name states, the Light is just that. At only 10.6 pounds, it’s definitely one of the most lightweight vacuums on the market today.

Ease of Use

For daily or even weekly (depending on how often you vacuum your home) use, the NV105 is really easy to use and maintain. One of its best-loved features is the ability to clean both hardwood floors and carpet due to its brush roll shut off option, which means it won’t scatter small pieces of dirt, sand or even kitty litter on bare floors, and it won’t scratch your hardwoods with a spinning brush.

The brush roll also automatically shuts off when the unit is in the upright position, so if you have it parked and are using the attachments, the brush roll won’t be constantly running over the same place in your carpet.

In user reviews, the hose is said to be very flexible and not hard and stiff like it is with some vacuums and the attachments do a great job. Since its lightweight, more than one review from people who use it on a regular basis says it’s really easy to steer and move around, even if you have a bad back or joint problems. While it is not technically self-propelled, and it doesn’t have swivel steering like the Rotator, it’s still really easy to maneuver.

Users also say it’s really easy to empty the extra-large dirt container and keep it clean, and of course, it’s nice you don’t need to buy bags for it.

One of its most convenient features is that all the attachments are stored on the machine itself, making it much less likely that they’ll get lost in the shuffle or that you won’t have them at hand when they are most needed.

As for power, one user says in his review that it even sucks up things that are a few inches away from the cleaner head. That’s really impressive considering the motor is smaller than those in other more expensive uprights on the market.

Pet Hair

While the Light NV105 does not have a HEPA filter incorporated into the design, it still does a good job picking up pet hair and even comes with an upholstery brush specifically for that use. One user in her review says she has two Pugs who shed hair like crazy, and it does a great job sucking up all that hair from both the floors and her furniture.

Difference vs Navigator Lift-Away and Deluxe Models

The biggest difference in these models is the power and overall weight. The Lift-Away and Deluxe both have 1200 watts, while the Light has only 700 watts, but then it only weighs 10.6 pounds vs about 15 pounds in the other models. Like the Deluxe, it does not have the lift away canister. The only other difference is in the attachments included. The Lift-Away comes with more of them, so it just depends on what you need.

Cons

There aren’t too many complaints about this light and efficient budget vacuum cleaner. While it does come with a tool for pet hair, more than one review says it would be really nice if it also had a HEPA filter to deal with the pet dander and other common allergens, However, for the price and other features, it’s something you probably won’t miss unless you have severe allergies.

If this is a major concern for you, you may want to look into the Navigator Lift Away , Rotator TruePet or Rotator Professional, as they all have sealed HEPA systems to clean fine dust and dirt as well as pollen, mold, and dander from the air in your home.

Consumer Reports

Overall, user reviews are very favorable, and this vac is rated at 4.5 out of 5 stars. Users love the lightweight design combined with the ease of steering and maneuverability. They say it is so convenient to use and love that the brush roll can be turned off to clean bare or hardwood floors but with it on, it does a very good job on carpeting.

Overall Impressions

The bottom line is that this is a great lightweight cleaner, especially if you’re on a budget and can’t afford or don’t want something more fancy. User reviews give it 4.5 stars which are a very good rating. It’s really easy to use, steer and clean. It’s a great investment if you need a starter vacuum cleaner, if you have back problems or need to carry it up and down stairs or if you just want a simple machine that works.
